TL;DR: Lag is getting ridiculous and new players hardly stick around regardless.

Has anyone else been noticing the increased lag lately?
We have a rather lengthy minecart system which is almost unusable because of the lag. Carts lag out, go backwards, disappear, get you stuck in a wall, and kill you on long journeys.
We have a automated skeleton killer that doesn't function at all, no mobs spawn because the room is full of skeletons stuck lagging in flowing water.
We have a cactus farm and automated wheat farm which aren’t functional because water doesn't flow the proper distance before it lags out and stops flowing properly.
We have a regular farm as well, and it takes up to 6 Minecraft days for wheat to grow. The maximum time it should take is 2. The lag is nearly tripling it's growth cycle for crops.
I know you don't notice this lag as prominently while building simpler structures or mining, however, we have these automated machines functional on our own multiplayer server, and we've ruled out everything except the lag.
These are things we've been working on over the last week, and their performance has continuously deteriorated as the lag has increased.
I'm not sure if it’s the amount of players online, or the block plugin logging everyone's actions, but at the current state, we are unable to play or enjoy any of our realms.

Here is a video of the spawner is the early morning.
This is mild compared to the afternoon, which I will post this afternoon.
Notice how the mobs and items are reset backwards every 2 seconds. It's moving in slow motion.
*edit*
Here is the afternoon clip. It takes nearly 2:30 for the skeleton to lag downstream, lag through the fire, and the items to lag to me.
I believe the lag is also messing with the server clock resulting in slower plant growth and decrease mob spawning rates.
Some items flat out disappear half way downstream, and some minecarts disappear when we place them never to be seen again.

We would love to donate if that could help fix it in a realistic time frame - but we could be bored with the game by the time the money actually adds up to enough to upgrade something.
Wouldn't it be easier to stop advertising the server so much as it's filling up?
The amount of players online versus the amount of one that own or belong to a realm is like 3:1.
Honestly, it feels like you are sacrificing existing users experience for new users, alot of which don't stick around to even purchase a realm, let alone multiple ones.

Surely you saw the pictures I posted in the community forums.
We currently have 3 realms and have been on constantly over the last 2 weeks working to make a name for us.
I feel like you missed the point entirely.
This isn't a thread saying OMG LAG QQ FIX IT.
This is a thread saying There is lag, and here is how it is interfering with game play.
I've PMed Intelli in the past but never received a response regarding donor status.
I made this thread to inquire if other users were running into problems with redstone circuitry, minecarts or the like - because unlike the half the people that herp derp around spawn getting constantly griefed, turning that part of the server into a cobblestone wasteland, we have productively built, used the forums to understand the realm system rather than making a mod explain it to us, and really enjoy the survival aspect of this server.
Don't get me wrong, I like the large amount of players on this server too...but seriously, go to spawn, alot of those people are just standing around - the amount of players actually being a productive part of the server is much less.
If it truly is just the sheer number of players logged in that cause lag, surely we could be more selective for the sake of the people who are actually surviving.
*edit* We've spent countless hours mining and used all of our iron and gold to make a 2 way 500+ block minecart system that is entirely useless because of the lag. I'm really not trying to sound rude, I'm trying to get across the seriousness of the issue.
*editedit* To get around the fact storage carts can't pass through unloaded chunks, we did a good portion of the track to accommodate storage carts going at the same rate as human carts.
On it's maiden voyage, we found out there is too much lag for the cart to keep up, so it still gets stuck in unloaded chunks.
*editeditedit* Last night there 70 something players, after the restart, it never passed 50 - and I stayed on for 30 more minutes. So dare I say it, a 15 minute afk timer could help too.
