RIP Molly and Gamer Luna, shut down this Friday.
Good job PinkiePony. You must feel so accomplished. *slow clap*
Is there a story about why they shut these down?

Hard to figure out exactly what the truth is but there was some pressure last year from a pressure group, Down with Molestia, which felt that the AskPrincessMolestia tumblr was part of rape culture and wanted the tumblr to be stopped.
Whilst the supporters of DWM said their fight wasn't about censorship, if successful, it would in effect act as censorship as it would clamp down on free speech and freedom of expression.
In the defence of DWM there is definitely a case for saying that Molestia was depicted as carrying out sexual assaults, rape, etc. which was made light of or presented in a humorous way.

However there is a question as to what affect APM tumblr has on it's audience, and whether stopping the tumblr would help make the world a better place.
So you have several opposing points of view in a highly charged and contentious area.
This wasn't helped by both sides having members send death threats and hate mail to the other side, which rather muddied the issue.
Both convinced in their convictions that they where doing what was best.
DWM probably wasn't responsible for the removal of the blog in the end, because it appears that JJ removed the blog himself, possibly after a cease and desist from Hasbro.
In anycase JJ is going ahead, it appears with the more popular creation of Gamer Luna:
http://askgamingprincessluna.tumblr.com/
And I believe there's someone already uploading an archive on the APM tumblr for anyone who wishes to judge for themselves.
I find myself conflicted over the results, on the one side I do not wish to see attitudes promoted which make the world a place in which rape and sexual harassment goes unquestioned and unpunished. On the other side was APM actually guilty of what it was accused of. Perhaps APM was useful as it brought into light, scrutiny attitudes which are worth discussing and debating.
Couple of quotes from Voltaire.
I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it.

Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities.

What is tolerance? It is the consequence of humanity. We are all formed of frailty and error; let us pardon reciprocally each other's folly - that is the first law of nature.
