About Yourself:
I'm happily married with no kids, more nieces and nephews than I know what to do with, and two enthusiastic Staffies. I'm a degree qualified engineer and run my own engineering consultancy which I have developed into a successful business over the last 24 months, building on a background in engineering management and technical dispute resolution. I enjoy quite a few hobbies including offroading in a modified Suzuki Sierra (or Samurai as it's known in the US), hunting, cooking, reading and gaming.
My gaming history spans a wide array of genres, with all of them being PC titles - I'm not a console gamer. Some of my favourites through the years (in no particular order) have been Commander Keen; Wolvenstine 3D; Battle of Britain; Doom; Soldier of Fortune II; Halflife II; Battlefield II; Abe's Oddysee; Age of Empires II; Civilisation IV; Warcraft II; SimCity 2000; Mass Effect series; Assassin's Creed series; Skyrim; and of course MineCraft.
I only became hooked on MineCraft in January of this year and was fortunate enough to stumble upon MineRealm as my first SMP server. I loved the community atmosphere from the moment I joined and haven't looked elsewhere for my MineCraft fix since
Qualifications:
My work often involves mediating between parties who are engaged in building disputes, so I have well developed arbitration skills. I am quite a laid back person and tend to joke around a bit in chat in an effort to keep it a light and relaxed environment. I have enough stress in my work day that I appreciate the server chat being relaxed and friendly. I try to help out newbies whenever possible and to respond to the regular "Can I have admin?" questions with civility, encouraging players to enjoy the server for the great legit survival environment it offers. I have formed numerous friendships with others in the community and don't believe I have ruffled too many feathers along the way.
With respect to the more technical aspects of moderation, I have not held a position of this nature on a gaming server before. I do have something of a background in IT as I have maintained a number of small business networks over the years as a side interest, including my own business currently, and have a reasonable amount of coding experience in Excel VBA. I touch type at around 80-85wpm with excellent accuracy and am the go-to computer guru and general technical geek for my extended circle of friends and family.
Why you deserve this position:
While there is an element of prestige associated with a Staff position, I really see it as being service oriented. A Staff member is expected to make themselves available at short notice to help new players, fix grief, assist with land disputes, check building logs etc - all of which require the Staff member to drop their personal projects to help elsewhere.
As such I don't believe it's a question of me being deserving of the position, but rather of me offering my services to help the community, and allowing Staff and the community to determine whether they think I am the right person to offer that assistance. Only Staff and the community can decide whether I am deserving of their trust.
Availability:
I'm one of the regulars
Because my business is my own and operates from a home office, I have very good availability. I run a triple screen setup and tend to leave MineRealm running on one screen during the day while I work, checking up on it every half hour or so to clear my zombie pigman grinder. I'm then active most nights from around 6pm GMT+8 until the early hours of the morning ... I'm quite nocturnal and typically don't sleep for more than 4-5 hours a night.
Anything else you wish to add:
I have really enjoyed my last few months on MineRealm and have made some great friends. I try to give back to the community by offering advice and assistance to those who need it, and would love to extend this further by assisting with Staff duties.
I've posted this application because although we have quite a few Staff at the moment, and they do a brilliant job when they are online, there are often long periods during the Australian afternoon and evening when no Staff members are online. Unfortunately this often leads to new players taking advantage by avoiding the swear filter, boasting about their griefing and other similarly disruptive behaviour - much of which disappears as soon as a Staff tag appears in chat, even without any direct action being taken. Having a Staff member online consistently should make the server quite a bit more enjoyable for the MineRealmians who play during this period.
