Mob despawn rules

So I'm trying to build an Animal Farm, and it would be quite beneficial to know the exact rules behind what makes my livestock disappear from time to time.
I'm looking for something a bit more specific than "too many too close together"; that much is abundantly apparent. I'm looking for X in Y, where X is a specific number and Y is a specific area, like say, 5 animals in a chunk, or 4 animals in a 10x10 area.
Furthermore, do hostile mobs count towards despawning my livestock? Does the area restriction have a height limit as well, or does it count from void to sky-top?
Thank you for your time.

I'm pretty sure its 6 mobs in a 16x16 area. As far as hostile mobs are concerned, if the area is sealed and lit up, then hostiles shouldn't spawn inside the farm area.

Ideally, Intelli will clarify this sometime... (or maybe he has and it is lost in the forums). I'm 100% positive it is not anywhere near 16 blocks though. Even checking a whole chunk seems improbable to me. I've built a lot of monster grinders... they have to be REALLY close to despawn... like maybe 6 blocks...
Edit: Also, before I lit under my city, there were literally hundreds of mobs that would spawn under it... so yea. I am not sure about height though.

Intelli wrote:The mob limiter script only does the following:
1. Checks each mob loaded into memory.
2. Finds other mobs within 3 blocks of that mob
3. If it finds more than 5 mobs, it removes the additional mobs.
So to clarify, if you have 5 mobs in one spot, it will not remove them.
If you have 11 mobs in one spot, it will remove 6 of them, and leave 5.

so basically what you need to do, is have 3x3 pens with a 3 block space between each pen minimum

This was the info I got in chat from Intelli in February. A couple of times since then Intelli or other staff has confirmed for me in chat that it is still accurate. So, unless there has been a change, the current mob limit is: 5 mobs in a 6x6x6 area.

Thank you sir, sorry for the superfluous post. I did try to use the search function and find the answer myself before posting, but my search-fu is pretty weak these days. v_v
