On the topic of DDoS and DoS attacks

So, it seems the script kiddies find it funny to take servers offline using their griefing clients and their DDoS clients. Now, seeing as this collective group of users are a bunch of 13 year old wannabe trolls, who couldn't write a line of code to save their life and probably have no idea what to do other than enter the server ip in a box and hit "K1LL NA0", it is probably safe to assume they don't know the repercussions of their playing around.

DDoS and DoS are both illegal. And while you may not have the time/money/effort to take these little punks to court over it, ISP's take a rather dim view of such actions. Seeing as we have their IP's from when they logged in, it shouldn't be hard to find their ISP. I'd like to suggest that Intelli personally notifies the ISP that these users, from these IP addresses, have been engaging in illegal and destructive behaviour.

I'd like to see the little punks' faces when their parents get a letter telling them their internet has been shut off.

/rant (in Server Discussion due to rather obvious reasons... we have been DoS'd all day)

I fully agree and support this. Hopefully there will be actions against them and shut them down. This kind of behavior is disruptive and harmful, plus it shows that these punks are wannabe hackers, which should be shut down before their actions lead to more advanced abilities.

Part of me feels like these kids that keep attacking the server aren't completely dumb when it comes to DDOS attacks. They probably know how to hide their IP to the point where it would make it more difficult to figure out their true IP they logged in from. It's surprising how much kids can know about computers today.

I was using proxies in grade 3 to play games during classes.

If they know how to DoS and DDoS they DEFINITELY know how to use a simple proxy.

It's a shame Intelli doesn't live in the USA. The FBI has several cybercrimes divisions who are responsible for these (among other) internet crimes.

Perhaps he could lodge a complaint with the canadian equivalent of the state department. If you can stir up a little media buzz, they may go to great efforts to avoid an international incident. Spin it as cyber-terrorism maybe? You'd need multiple incidents of USA-based attack on canadian servers, but it's the only way to get prosecution.

I don't think its worth creating a potential international incident to stop a DoS attack. Couldn't you write a script which checks for unusual packet patterns?

I think DoS's work by sending loads of useless packets to attack the server....

Actually it doesn't matter where Intelli lives. What matters is this: where are Intelli's servers located? If the game.minerealm.com server is hosted in the US then US authorities have jurisdiction.

Because the US Government claims it. Screw them. They don't have any legal right to claim a domain that resides on a server that is in another country.

Honestly, I don't think a video game would be a legal priority of any US federal agency. If it were a corporation being attacked, then yeah, they'd get all over that and stop it. But for a video game, doubtful. In the US, they help out corporations so that corporations will help them out, unfortunately.
