Any tips for better FPS

I love it when I get good FPS. I use Optifine. But for some reason recently, my FPS likes to bank from 50-60 all the way to 10 out of NOWHERE in Minecraft. Currently, I am using fast graphics for most of my things, like trees and clouds. I use a slightly smaller render distance. I can't seem to get my FPS to be better.
Can anyone help?

If you don't mine using them, 1v1 texture packs increase fps.

Download the optifine mod, it has many more options for graphics.
Another awesome thing is going ctrl+alt+delete and right click on minecraft, click go to process, the process is javaw. Right click it and change the priority to high. Ignore any warnings... You can use some launcher called faster craft which does the same thing...
Both these put together give me an extra 20-30 fps on my tiny pathetic laptop.
Hope I helped!!

Try turning the Smooth Lighting System to off. Set render distance to tiny, get a 1x1 texture pack, and use OptiFne. Your Fps will go through the roof.

I suggest moving this topic to the appropriate forum. It doesn't belong in Staff Applications.

If any of you have RAM to spare (not that many of us do) you can give Java even more power. Note that this is usually just used for bigger texture packs, but can most definitely improve FPS as well.
On Windows 7:
1. Open control panel
2. In the "Search Control Panel" box on top right, type "Java"
3. Click in, and under the Java tab, it should have the header "Java Runtime Environment Settings"
4. Click "View..."
5. In the "Runtime Parameters" box, type "-Xincgc -Xmx1G"
6. Click "Ok", then click "Apply"
7. Java now has 1Gig RAM dedicated to it.
You can change it to more, just replace 1G with 2G, etc.
Happy minecrafting.

In this case it stands for Frames Per second. It is the rate at which your graphics card "paints" the image onto your screen every second.
