Really inconsistent mob damage

So, I get hit by one creeper take a few bits of damage, get hit by the next one....took me out and EVERYTHING in my inventory.
Is this a common occurrence or something that can be looked into, I usually take minimal mob damage but this is the second time a random creeper has totally decimated me and my inventory, and it's a bit of a hassle considering the time it takes to level to chant items and so on.

It could have been a creeper that was struck by lightning.

Happens to me too. Really annoying; although I found the closer I am (more or less) the more damage it does. But yeah, it's normally a little random.
Also, not sure whether this is normal or not, but are they meant to just disappear without causing an explosion?

Pretty sure explosions, including from creepers, do more damage if you're close to them. Maybe one creeper was farther away from you (because you hit it or ran before it blew up) but the second one snuck up on you and blew up in your face?

Hit detection seems a little shifty at the moment. I've had creepers blow up in my face and only took a couple hearts of damage, but have also had ones blow up quite far away and kill me in one hit. Same thing with zombies.

That is probably a creeper despawning.

Even the slightest lag can make a huge difference in creeper damage because of the way the damage is distributed. Creepers themselves are, I am sure, all using the exact same explosion, since any other claim is just silly.

yes, but they damage me much the same as if they were exploding. It's kind of confusing~
