These things are normally all over the place, but on the server, it seems they are almost nowhere. From what I've seen, I am guessing they are only present in chunks that were generated by players who logged on, and they aren't present in chunks that were automatically generated. But whatever the cause is, they are incredibly rare, so we're missing out on some things. Exposed ore in the tunnels, underground wood, natural minecart tracks, natural chests with melon/pumpkin seeds and cocoa beans, cobweb blocks, and cave spider spawners.

So anyway I don't know if it was intentional or not, so thought I'd point it out because I didn't see anything about it.

Same here. I found 3 within 100 blocks of my ocean realm.

I found one huge one right next to my realm clearly visible. They spawn under deserts most of the time.

While digging the subway I found at leats 4 separate ones. One was absolutely gigantic, and I lifted over 5 stacks of rails from it among all the ores. There's one along the east line I think that we actually used part of it with minor modifications.
There's also quite a few ravines too, and the coolest ones are exposed to the sea floor.

The Subway passes through a number of Mineshafts, and yes, at one point the track actually passes along one

DGannon, I know of 2 ravines and an abandoned mineshaft system within 300 blocks SSW from you. I haven't really checked any other direction.

Yes there is a small area where they generated near my realm out in the middle of nowhere. But beyond that in the wilderness where nobody has land (that is, most of the world), you can't find them anywhere.

You actually can find them; anywhere...

Near the border of the world I found one, to be precise. Doesn't get more untouched and "wild," then that.

I have actually found 5 seperate mineshafts, there are alot of them, you just have to go away from areas that weren't wiped, also there easy to find by caverns
