Yesterday I joined this server and immediately felt comfortable. The people seemed nice and I liked the realm system. I decided to try and make a home here.

Spent 14 hours strip mining public land decently far away from spawn (~1000 blocks). Got pretty lucky and amassed 40 diamonds, over a stack each of lapis/obsidian/gold and many stacks of iron. I made a home near bed rock that I covered in cobble. Made a wheat farm and even put up a sign stating it was my home next a (symbolic) bed.

I closed off the staircase from the surface with many layers of dirt and gravel and removed all torches. I put my valuables chest under the cobble in my room. I tried my best to hide the cave and the mine.

Someone got in during the 8 hours I was asleep and tore up the entire floor, emptying my chest of valuables.

What could I have done better? Keep in mind this was my first night on this realm and I went to great lengths to hide my home, yet someone still took everything.

Don't repair anything, have a mod check who broke the blocks and have the guy banned. I suspect whoever did it just used Xray to find you.

Don't replace, repair or remove anything. Contact a moderator in game - they can they check who destroyed and took your stuff.

Thank you. A mod repaired the damage. Couldn't get me back a lot of what I lost, but promised me the offender was banned. Because of his swift actions, I think I feel comfortable enough to buy a realm today.

But how would I have done this better? Since the mod could restore the blocks, but not the contents of the chest, should I have made all my diamonds/lapis/gold into blocks and placed them instead of having them in a chest? That way, when the rollback happened I would have at least had those.

There are many solutions out there for protecting your stuff. You mentioned a good one. Turning all your ores and diamonds into bocks. At least this way, as you say, when something goes wrong, you can get them back.

Be sure to buy a realm. This way, unless by glitch or mod, people can't destroy anything inside your private realm.

Keeping your valuables in block form is a good idea; many players who don't yet have a realm simply keep them on their person when logging out. Otherwise, make sure you actually hide your chests, such as by burying them in dirt.

I would also suggest keeping your valuables in your inventory while you're offline. Right now that might be a bad idea since 1.9 is imminent, but usually it's a good thing to do if you don't yet have a private realm. Just remember to put your goodies back in a hidden chest before you go running around!

of all the solutions placing valuables in block form is probably best idea there is. Although for other stuff I'd suggest a bank run by someone in a prominent realm.
