Am I stealing someone's land?

I found a few public plots with somebody's structures built on them and I'm planning on buying at least one of the plots. But I'm not sure if someone's going to come back for it. I don't want to destroy their creations and have them come back claiming I'm griefing. There's a sign with the name of flammeguttens. Has this player been banned or something? Are they planning on returning? Do I have the right to buy the plot(s) anyway and tear down the buildings? After all, it's public. Nobody owns it. There is a sign on it specifically saying: "flammeguttens house dont come in plz"

The plots are at 525x75, 525x25, 525x-25, 625x25, 525x25, and 525x75. There's also public land beyond that.

So what really constitutes purchasable land? Would it be considered griefing to purchase and build on land when someone has their name on a sign on the land? idk. maybe i'm going about this to far....

In general, you can purchase it as long as you allow the person to come in and collect their stuff to move elsewhere.

Alright, first, buy it. You buy it first, then it is yours as long as flameguttens gets his stuff back.

Second, all you have to do is dissassemble anything you think he/she built, and put the materials of theirs in a chest. When the player comes back on, sees his creation gone, and it was on your (new) land, then you can easily say "Hey, I put your stuff in this chest, here take it."

If you are scared that when he is on and your not, he will complain about griefeing to a mod, then just place a sign next to your chests saying that his belongings are in them. A mod should probably see the sign as well. MAKE IT NOTICEABLE.

Don't sweat it, it is your realm. Give the guy his stuff back, and you will have violated no rules.

Good luck, hope I have been helpful.

According to the rulebook, if you purchase land someone else has built on, you must give them 14 IRL days to collect any of their stuff. After that, its a free for all. Or so I recall.

This helps me out a lot. I had posted a topic about pretty much the same situation, except I already own the land and want to clear up the space the other users had taken up while it was public. I'll just disassemble it and put all the stuff in a chest like you suggested.

This makes it very clear on how to handle the situation. Thanks, I appreciate it since I was almost in a similar situation. Unfortunately, I wish that I would have found this answer sooner. :P

What if the realm was previously private, but was reverted to public because the owner hadn't been on in 30 days? Does the former owner retain rights to the materials if he suddenly came back, or does the loss of private realm status mean forfeiture of the materials within the realm?

I would guess that the same policy applies. It becomes public. Let them know that you bought the realm, put their stuff in a chest. :P

I actually couldn't re-find this thread, so that was big fail. So I just figured it wasn't a big deal and went ahead and bought the realm. I was having trouble keeping my chests hidden from thieves anyway. Unfortunately, before reading this, I disassembled half of their house and stored the materials in my own chests. If they do come back, I'm willing to give up as much cobble as they want as I have plenty of that. It wasn't anything special anyway. It was a pretty ugly house. It appears there was already people passing by, partially taking down walls.

I'm glad I asked because it seems there are others wondering the same thing. Thanks for the answers!
