I can't talk

I was on minecraft 1.8 when I saw that i could get on minerealm so I get on and someone joined the game for the first time so I went to say welcome but it said you cannot send chat messages so I was wondering if the was a bug with me joining a 1.7 server in 1.8 or if I did something wrong so if you could please answer my question that would be great Thanks!

Prob the chat settings, I did something like that before and it stopped me from talking in chat till I turned it back. I just forget what setting /command it is.
