Is it possible to get nether items in the wilderness?

Once I saw a netherporal in the wildernis, but instead of teleporting you to the nether a message like this appears:
"You are trying to teleport to a location behind the world border"
So I think, no.

Strange because I looted a chest in the wilderness with nether items in it. Is this a cause for concern?

It could be an old chest because back in the past, I believe you could access the nether portal in nether to the wild. I am not sure though.

Can you recall the location of the chest? I suspect Staff would be interested in checking it out...

Idk if you can still use mobs to bring items into the wild. Used to work.
