There have been quite a few posts lately about whitelisting, privatizing spawn and other complaints relating to griefing. So in response, I will do my best to clear up any confusion and misconceptions. I will explain to you how everyone has a connection to Spawn City and how it is all our responsibility to maintain it.
Before I begin first things, first.
This server will never, ever, not even for a second, have a whitelist.
This is but one thing that has set our server apart from all the others and just as it has been said before, it will be said again. The uniqueness of the server comes from the fact that it is public and the fact that anyone can just log in and play without having to wait to get on the whitelist. Whitelists cause servers to lose their fun and make people feel unwelcome. Not satisfied with that answer? Well too bad, here's an end-all quote from intelli, himself.
-Why is Spawn City everyone's responsibility?
Imagine this, you are new to Minecraft, or are looking for a new server to call home. You log into the Minerealm server, drop down that waterfall and step onto the sidewalk, you look up and see a heavily griefed and area in front of you. Being new to the server, this person has no connections to the server yet and no knowledge of how awesome and unique our server is (realms, no whitelists, the people, etc.). They are going to assume the server is not taken care of and griefing runs rampant. The person is going to log off with a bad opinion (wrong opinion
) of our server and probably never come back. They never even had a chance to experience the server and made an assumption based off of a couple of griefers, rather than get a good first impression based off of all of our awe inspiring structures and creativity. The latter is the impression we should be leaving on newcomers every single time.
Also, keep in mind that a newcomer is not able to warp to your realms and see their beauty, effort, and intricacy you have put into your realms. All they are going to see before they choose to stay or go is a a trashed Spawn City. Therefore, Spawn City is representative of all of us, from the newest members to the most aged and seasoned of Minerealm veterans and our realms. It is an extension of every person and realm existing on the server.
Also, Spawn City is the most beautiful treasure on our server, just as something like the Rain Forest or the Pyramids are to Earth. It is the most contributed and visited place on the entire server. It is a place of vast diversity ranging from a newcomer's very first home, before they enter the world of realmdom, to the infrastructure and buildings made collaboratively by regulars on Minerealm. It is a second home to people who already belong to a realm, because you can always come here to make something new or renovate something old. It is even a hang out spot, people flock here from all over to socialize and get their Minecraft on daily, and it is the staging area for casual PvP'ers before heading out for battle. This makes Spawn the most unique realm on the entire server.
Even aside from my explanation, I can guarantee everyone has at least some sort of unforgettable memory of Spawn (i.e. PvP Castle (R.I.P.) to smaller events like the day talini played a concert for people with note blocks) that connects you to it.
-Okay, so what is the problem?
The problem has nothing to do with the content within Spawn City, this is what makes it such a beautiful place. The problem is griefing which is the only ugly thing that happens within Spawn City, this is the random and distasteful removal of blocks that turns creations into eyesores and makes a mockery of all the hard work that is put into Spawn.
-Very well put! What can be done to help?
Some quick preliminary stuff I suggest:
If you spot anyone griefing spawn, use a program like fraps to film them in the act, or take multiple screen shots to show them performing the act of griefing. Even though moderators can act quickly, sometimes it is still too late by the time anyone can lay down the banhammer. It is better to not to publicly announce it over chat until you have the compiled adequate proof (filming or many screen shots). Programs like fraps will run all the time so all you need to do is press a single button to begin filming. It is quick and convenient and produces the best evidence for all things bannable.
Secondly, I ask a favor of you. Please take the time to walk around spawn and get to know it better. This especially includes the areas besides the front, think of Spawn Building as the radius and walk along the sidewalks and see the coast line, all the wonderful villages that have popped up and the single houses here and there. You will find things you never thought existed and most of all you will discover the true beauty, uniqueness and diversity that blesses the land within it. Spawn is a constantly changing place, so if you have seen it once, you have most definitely NOT seen it all.
The biggest thing you can do to help is once you are familiar with SC go around and fill in griefs with the correct block, and by no means do you need to do this every time you log in, but you can if you wish. I have been fixing up Spawn for quite a while now (with the help of many others too!) and it has become my main task on the server these days. I am never going to be done since it is a constant task and I will continue to do so even if no one else helps, however, it will just take longer. But if everyone who logs on were to rally together for an hour and go to work on Spawn, it would probably take significantly less time for the routine maintenance. The less time it takes the better.
You do not need my or anyone's approval to do the majority of these, nor do you need me to tell you how to do it since that would violate the nature of Spawn City so I encourage you to use your own creativity and logic on fixing and filling in griefs.
However the only guideline I ask for is consistency in what blocks you use. This means if there is a giant crater with a level dirt surrounding area, use dirt to fill it in. Or if a mostly cobble house has been badly griefed, use cobble to rebuild it. Otherwise the fixing you have done will be for nothing. I am online a large portion of the time so if you are confused about what to do please ask me and I will be glad to help!
Tasks needed:
-Filling in holes. This includes staircases people make deep into the ground, rows of dirt removed from topsoil, holes going straight down to bedrock, swiss cheesing of hills and the ground, etc. This is not an all encompassing list, and I trust you will be able to use your own judgment when something off this list occurs.
-Fixing the coastline. This includes using dirt to stop the inflow of water and re level out the land again so the coast looks nice and crisp. The less running water and more leveled out coast line in the end, the better.
-Fixing griefed houses. This includes fixing the floors and walls that have been griefed with the appropriate blocks. Sometimes depending on the amount of griefing it may be more prudent to just remove the house and replace the leftover floor with dirt again, other times for tall or big houses it may be better to annotate them and make them smaller and remove the worst griefed areas. Lastly, if you feel like renovating a house to make it look more elaborate and exciting please, do. The more fun you have doing these tasks the better.
-Fixing sidewalks. This can be the more complicated task, as I am very picky with how sidewalks look. It is usually best to just put whatever single layer of stone slab is missing back and cobble outlining back. This is my bread and butter so if there is a huge fix needed I will ask that you leave it to me, but if you feel you must the general design for sidewalks is: cobble sides, 2-3 wide of a SINGLE layer of stone slab on the inside. This should end up having the stone slabs one half block lower than the cobble outside. The stone slabs should NEVER EVER be level with the cobble.
-Various renovation/demolition projects. These I will be announcing in the thread below and in game and the more help the merrier. These happen on a whim sometimes, but I usually like to direct these because I am very familiar with Spawn. I will normally ask for a consensus from the people online to make sure it is okay with the people of the server first. I ask you clear any ideas/thoughts for big projects like these with me and other people first so you aren't accused of griefing and don't upset the server.
This list will be updated as needed.

intelli wrote:we are never, ever, switching to a whitelist =]And almost for the exact same reason, Spawn City will never be private, and this I can guarantee you. If Spawn City were private, it would be the exact same thing as having a mini whitelist.
