"I didn't know" is hardly an excuse. There are signs around at spawn. AND on top of that, stealing is pretty much always against the rules on most servers. At the very least you could have asked a moderator to clarify.

Not knowing what the rules are doesn't excuse you from their enforcement.

And there are a few nifty signs that are in spitting distance of where you spawn that tell you what all of the rules are. Our assumption is that since these rules are listed along a walkway that is impossible to circumvent, everyone would have to have read them.
