Hello. I'm a new player on this server and was banned this morning. I wasn't trying to do anything wrong, so if I violated any of the rules, please let me know and I'll avoid such actions in the future. (For example, I wasn't attacking other players or griefing sites that appeared to be occupied.)

I was clearing out an abandoned area. Specifically, an area that I was teleported to from the random teleporter, that didn't appear to belong to anyone and only contained materials that were mostly torn out already. I was told that this was allowed and in fact even a good thing to do, so the materials could be reused for building. However, if that's not true, then again please let me know so I can abide by the rules of this server.

If this is ok, then please unban my account (but again, tell me what I did wrong so I can avoid that and keep from accidentally getting banned again). Thank you.

You were indeed banned for griefing. I agree with you the area looked abandoned but that doesn't mean you can remove it. Next time ask staff to check the building for you and give you permission to remove it.
