How much money does it take to create/maintain a good server. I am trying to prove to my friend that it is a bit of money but I don't know the exact costs. I would appriciate your help!

It depends if you are going to pay a company to host the server at a data center, or host it yourself on your own computer.

Hosting it on your own computer.

If you want to host Minecraft on your own computer, it's free.

Okay but will it run as well?

Depends on your computer (RAM mostly imo), internet connection, and how many people you want. My friend hosted a server on his pretty bad computer with decent internet and 3-4 people (including him) could play on it it with very little lag.

Try it and find out for yourself.

If the specs matter at all, my friend used his computer for a minecraft server. He had 6gb of ram, 750mw power supply, an i7, and something fancy for his internet. Anyways he could fit 10 guys on there without too much lag, but itd downfall exponentially after 10.

I just asked my friend, and his computer had 1.5 gb RAM, and it still didn't lag very much.
(If you care, he has a much better one now, 4 gb)
