How to Put New Texture Packs on Minecraft

Does anyone know how to do this? I am a bit confused.
1. Open minecraft
2. Navigate to the texutres
3. click open texture file
4. close minecraft
5. make a new zip and name it whatever you want.
6. put your terrain.png file in the new zip
7. open minecrat and enjoy
