Personally, I was disappointed with the way mojang ended up useing experience. I was hoping you could like buy upgrades such as running faster and jumping faster. Post what you wanted to see before he released the enchantments.

FTFY

OT: I feel pretty satisfied with enchantments. You could run faster with potions.

Those sorts of features might eventually be added:

I'm not exactly disappointed with the experience system--the enchantments are pretty nice--but it would be nice to have a somewhat more permanent benefit to gaining experience. I suspect the issue is one of balance--if players can exp-farm to get benefits like faster movement or better attack strength, how powerful should those benefits be? They need to be good enough that it's worth the effort of getting the experience, but not so great that they end up being a game-breaker.

This would screw up pvp unless they are only for a few seconds

That's what I was getting at with the balancing issues. Perhaps it would be a system like McMMO (not in the details of the overpowered insta-mining pick power or tree-exploding axe power, but in the broader idea that it would be an increase in the player's abilities, triggered at will for a short time, with a level system that persists after death).

I meant to vote I was satisfied... I think the xp system is really good. although they cant improve actual game skills like running, they provide great enchantments like proficiency and I think 'silk touch?' If thats what you call it. and true, potions provide access to better player skills. so the lack of enchantment benefits isn't a big deal.
