1. Is salt.. It can come from the ocean.. we dont plant it.. ans it disolves in water

2. An Oil lamp. the fire uses the oil and they go out at around the same time (my mom had an antique with it ingraved :O)

4. It's a book Or more formally a textbook due to the bit about being idiots at the beginning and Wiser when you're done

5. Howling overhead mad me think moon though i could be wrong :x
