Hello my friends. I've had this problem for about a month now, and I've been attempting to find a fix, but most fixes do not work.
When I open the main Minecraft.exe, the update page does not show up. Instead, at the top of the screen it says: <html><body><font color="#808080"><br><br><br><br><br><br><br><center>Failed to update news<br>java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect</center></font></body></html>
I am still able to get into the game, but when I attempt to join a server, I get this: Internal client error: java.net.SocketException: Permission denied: connect
I really would like help, because playing on Minecraft.net has certain problems.

Sounds like a firewall/anti-virus/Windows Defender is blocking your access. Try disabling something like that, and let us know which (if any) you have. Also Googling helps, no doubt someone else has had this issue.

This is definitely a problem with internet connectivity. Try modifying your firewall rules... did you install anything new before this happened?

Ok, problem is still happening. I set it so Norton and Windows allow the program, but I think this stupid Norton Safety Minder is messing with Minecraft.

Ew Avast. Uninstall Avast and get Comodo.

Nothing is wrong with Norton, it is a great anti-virus despite being one of the more paranoid ones. It does its job well. If you're like me you get it for free from Comcast so it's the best one you can get without paying money.

Avast is free, and lightweight in comparison to Norton, Norton has gotten a bit better over time, but it's far from the best. Anyway, opions and all that...
