Question on custom Avatar uploads

I'm trying to make my own custom avatar but have run into a problem with the 6.00Kib limit.
I have been able to upload from my machine, but the 6KIB limits the quality of what I can upload.
I have tried using the upload url option but it usually comes up with invalid Url.
I've noticed other users have been able to upload large image avatar without any trouble as well as animated avatars which are much larger than 6Kib.
So question for the tech adepts out there on the sever. How can I upload an avatar successful that's very detailed. What are the correct file formats to use and how can I avoid the image becoming too pixalated?
I've got access to GIMP 2.0 as my main image manipulation program.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
