Why Do Chickens Breed Live Chickens?

I was playing on my private server when I realized something: how can you make two chickens breed to make them have a LIVE baby? Someone should REALLY inform Notch about this D:

Someone should also inform Notch that throwing eggs really doesn't make chicks. Just an incredibly eggy ground.
Hell, I should something like that next Hallowe'en.
