minecraft won't let me play online. does anyone know how to fix this?

More details? What does it do?

every time I try to play minecraft it say that I cannot connect to minecraft.net, but I can sign in to minecraft.net. it also doest show the 1.8 update info

Alright, a few things to try then

If you're running windows 7, go ahead and run Minecraft in Administration mode.

Next up, click the options button right as you run Minecraft. Then click force update. And then done.

Then try and log in. Tell me if it works :/

Also, keep re-trying to log in a few times. Was forcing me to click login a few times last night before i was able to log in. >_>

I'm not using windows 7. I tried the force update but it didn't work. could it be java that I need to update?

What system are you using? And Do you know what version of MC you are using? And maybe, though i really havent updated Java in a few...uh, months?

Your problem sounds like a permission error. Maybe a firewall?

its using windows vista and I have minecraft 1.8. I recently had to change java to a different version to do some classes for the army I'll try to update java and see if that fixes it.

The current version is MineCraft 1.8.1.

Vista. Ouch. No wonder you're having problems. Your system is one large problem.

If you've got 1.8.1, then updating Minecraft is a moot issue. The issue is now connecting to minecraft authentication servers to login. You have bought Minecraft, i believe?

Alrighty, im just making sure. You'd be surprised at some people....

At any rate, Do you have a firewall or an Anti-virus installed? You'd have to make an exception for MC. And as i said before, make sure you click log in a few times. Other than that, you've moved past my general knowledge >_>
