my friend keeps texting me about how its come out and how awesome it is, and i went to youtube, which shows videos of 1.8 and how its come out. so why has it not appeared in notch's blog and the website and the login screen?

I don't think it's out, but then again I don't have a computer to check

The current 1.8 is unofficial. It was leaked by one of the few early testers, and Notch then made it available semi-officially through minecraft's website (so that people don't get their accounts stolen by downloading tampered-with leaked copies, I guess). But 1.8 isn't a finished product (apparently there are changes being made tomorrow), and it won't be automatically downloaded to players' clients until the fully-official version.

the pre-release is out, but the real 1.8 isnt yet, as far as i know.

I think the made it 1.7.3 again. The dev. Also, all the minecraft servers were being really laggy for 1.8 . I tried a bunch. I had to go back to 1.7.

Well the new pre-release for 1.8 came out, and the XP orbs have been fixed.
