Is this a secret friday update?

The event happens around 12:00.
Obviously these fellows are playing the well known custom map known as skylands, however they are using absolutely no mods to my knowledge. So my question is what is this?

You know how sometimes specific chunks don't load on smp servers? This was similar to that, the server wasn't telling the client that anything had updated in that chunk so the client thought it was still night there.

No, if it was that it would have been fixed when he placed/destroyed a block, and the cobble would have appeared as normal, not invisible.
