I didn't see lava or pistons or anything of the sort. Have you figured out a way to automatically kill them and store their gold armor in hoppers, or do you just have to punch them to death?

No no, it is much easier than that. Once you have caught the VVolf, simply dangle lapis on the outside of its cage. The confused animal will attempt to gnaw off any body parts constrained by the trap and eventually die of self-infatuation.
