Item frames ... should they be avoided?

Righto - so I'm in the middle of rebuilding my storage vault, and I have 288 DC's that previously had signs stating their contents. The realm is also my "ark" for the moment, as it's the only realm I'm not wiping and contains all my valuable villagers (x5) and 3-4 of each animal type that I own, plus a few sheep colour variants. Total number of entities is currently around 75.
I would dearly love to use item frames instead of signs to denote the contents of the chests. That is 288 item frames though. I don't know what effect (if any) that would have on the server or client.
Questions for anyone who might know, or ideally Rokkr/Intelli. Are item frames:
1) included in the 100 mob/realm cap? (suspect not)
2) terribad for server lag?
3) terribad for client lag?
I realise that item frames aren't currently protected - that's not an issue as the vault is fully secured. Also I play on a fairly high-end rig so client lag isn't much of a concern. I'm really most worried about whether using item frames will despawn my mobs, and whether it will cause noticeable/significant server lag.
Cheers
