I think it's awesome that they're developing an open-source gaming platform. Granted, the actual client is obviously going to be closed-source. Paired with some open hardware (which is expected to be announced in the following days), they're giving Sony/Xbox/Wii/PC gaming a run for their money, which is always good. Between the directions MS has gone toward gaming with windows 8 and the 'Always on kinect' with the XBox One, and Sony with their locking down with hardware, not to mention the rootkit fiasco and the hacking fallout of 2011, a good alternative is needed. All this does is benefit consumers in the long run.

It's a bit like Google fiber taking on the telcos, someone needs to shake up the incumbents, just enough to scare the industry.

Sounds like it could be a very nice alternative to XBMC for my media rig.

I think I heard they plan to announce 3 things in this week, first being the Steam OS. Perhaps we will see the fabled steam box soon, which would compliment this very nicely. The streaming from PC to TV over LAN should be very cool and I'm looking forward to it!

So if I'm reading the info right I could install this in a dual boot system?
That would be very handy.
I bet you can already do this with XBMC but I've never looked into that option

Perhaps I just haven't been following the Steam news closely enough, but I absolutely didn't see this coming.

Sony is still going strong, and beat out Xbox. Microsoft screwed themselves over by even introducing the Xbox one, so they're out. Wii is just... There. PC gaming will never die, until holographic games. Most likely.

And speculating on systems that haven't even been released yet....classy
