Help with linux errors?

Hi guys. So I just upgraded from Ubuntu Maverick to Quantal (through Natty, Oneiric, and Precise). When I did, there was a strange error where, with certain windows, the title bar simply would not show up.

No, it's not just hidden behind the panel, the title bar is actually missing, I checked. It's also been occurring with some other windows. If anyone knows whether this is a glitch or intended feature, and, either way, if I can install a fix or a workaround, I would appreciate some help.

p.s. Java still isn't working -_-

looks like your display manager crashed?

Did you have it configured with lightdm or gdm?

Also, it looks like you're using gnome fallback? I forget the unity version. There's a couple of things this could be caused by. Do you always use unity? Gnome?

try this to test...let me know if it works
Code: Select all
lightdm --test-mode
It could be caused by the desktop environment not fully loading, the drivers crashing, trying to load a bad profile, compiz crashing...etc.

EDIT: On second thought...they discontinued Unity 2D with Quantal. Log out, and select the little ubuntu icon next to your username/password, to the right. Make sure it's 'ubuntu (Defualt)' (personally I prefer gnome, but eh). I suspect you're trying to load unity 2d, but things are broken when upgrading? Try logging in as 'guest', and see if things are still broken.

Personally I've never had much luck with 'upgrade'. I've always just ended up doing a full system install (saving my /home on a separate partition).

Oh, I forgot to mention that I installed gnome-panel and I'm using gnome classic with effects.
