Redstone under Chest = Locked? :)

Not sure how hard this would be for intelli, but I know he likes to do all his programming, no mods and all that. So I was thinking, maybe it would be possible to make it so that if you power a chest block with redstone, it will lock the chest? I think that would be really cool, especially since you could theoretically rig a whole room full of chests to a single switch for easy locking, plus it wouldn't require an additional mod to function. I can't imagine it would cause lag either. So, maybe this isn't one of my dumb ideas?! :P

I flip a switch in your room. I am now able to steal from every chest.
I support your idea under the condition that you allow me to attempt to steal from you under this system while you watch.

This is just another one of your stupid ideas.Hate to break it to you.

Please think your ideas through. Consider the following points before expressing yourself in public. And by you i mean everyone.

1. What are the benefits of your system?
2. What are the downsides?
3. How is your system superior to the current system?

For the proposed RS system, i see no real benefits. The downside is that chests are harder to access by the true owner if the RS is placed correctly and easier to be looted if placed incorrectly. The RS system is weaker than the current system. There is no reason for intelli to spend time on this.

ok check it out. in this pic, the chest (would be) unlocked. but you break away that torch at the other end, and it's locked. I'm not 100% sure but I believe that even with lag, if an intruder tried to place a torch there (the spot which you'd probably want to put farther from the attached chests than I did in the pic), it wouldn't power the circuit before it disappeared due to being unplaceable. So you could wire all your chests to this setup, and easily unlock everything with 1 little torch :) and the intruders would be locked out of your chests by the lack of said torch!

also, I think it would be cool to see what people came up with in terms of vault design.

as far as the difficulty of coding the change, I can't imagine it would be much harder than changing a tag somewhere like "redstoneactivated = true" in the code. I dunno about that either, I'm no programmer.

But I think that's all the elaboration I have. :P

I think this is really good. The old gravel and stuff over the chest first of all looks ugly. Secondly there is lag and lag causes blocks to not reapear for a while. I really support this idea and think that it should be put in ASAP. Also, (this isn't to all the people who don't like the idea) some of you people who don't like the idea are accused theives.

PS: Icarus what texture pack are you using?

It doesn't have to operate under a switch, you could destroy/place torch to lock/unlock chest. That is what I would do.
