Local Chat and /local Command

I'll keep this short. Basically, you could type /ch l to talk to people within like 5 realms of you. If you type /local, you can see a list of the 5 closest players to you. This could help free up global chat, and work well for towns and cities.

Why not just use party chat?

Because you can only join one party, I think, and it wouldn't show who was near you.

Well you can freely join/leave parties, as far as seeing whos near you I don't agree with that, I can see it beign abused in pvp.

Never really thought of that, and I don't quite see how it would be abused. Also, it could be disabled in the nether, like many other commands.

Well would you want to be sneaking up on someone just to have them /local so they know your near them? And it could be disabled but other than that what purpose would it serve in the regular server? I'm just curious is all.

I like this idea, with a few minor suggestions:
1) rather than setting an arbitrary number of realms included in the /local distance, why not just make it so that players in chunks currently rendered for you are considered to be in your "local" area? That way, you can often tell at a glance who would be receiving your message--if you can see them, you can talk to them. (Of course, there may be situations where you can't see them even if they're rendered--if they're at the far end of your rendered area, or if they're at a very different Y level than you.)
2) Based on suggestion (1), the /local command might be unnecessary, which would eliminate the possible abuse Rokkr described. Alternatively, if /local is kept in the proposal, I would suggest that it list all the players who are within your "local" range, rather than just listing the 5 closest ones. As it is currently written, the command would always list 5 players--if there are 10 within your local range, it will only list half of them, and if there are none within that range, it would list the 5 closest ones outside of that range (which wouldn't be very helpful, since they won't hear your /ch l messages anyway).

I like the idea, but it might cause considerable lag seeing as people are constantly moving and switching between local chats. It might not even be possible to implement. Maybe someone knowledgable can tune in?

There are many servers that I have played on that have this command. Personally I think it is somewhat useless, but could be useful to a small percentage of the community. With that being said I don't think that Intelli would waste his time coding this in order for only a select few to actually use it.

The last server I played on with this implemented was really fun! The chat was completely silent and the Admins/Mods would yell if you used the wrong channel. Imagine playing Multiplayer Minecraft in a funeral home. That was essentially what the server was like.

Thats the extreme view.

The other view is a "whatever" view, which will have very few people using it.
