A live map is cool.
I've seen this pluggin operate. it would not handle the size or playerbase of MineRealm well.

I just want a very simple map that tells the realms people own.

In 2.0 we had a map with all the realms overlaid on it. However, it was removed because of the load it put on the server. If that strains the server, I don't think we will be seeing a real time map.

Are there any good client side mappers that we can use?
Time I started a Nordica Explorer's and Cartographers Guild. ^^

I'm almost certain that cartographing the map with a client side mod would count as an advantage over other players and not be allowed.

Hmm, there is definately that point.
My plan was to simply post the map on a forum post topic, thus avoiding any advantage by sharing the fruits with the entire community.
A new map would be helpful to link up structural projects like roads and the subway.
Also I'ld love to see a politcal map showing the different realm empires and such.
What is need is a mod that can only record the surface view.
Atleast as a stop measure gap until the website map is back online.

Um. Well. There used to be a map that was updated daily. It was only created in off-peak hours, so it didn't really hurt (I don't think)... it has been broken for some time though. A "live" map implies that it updates the map in realtime, which would hurt.
I think that plugin got outdated so Intelli removed it (it couldn't display the newer blocks that have been added... they were just black squares). Aside from that though, it was really nice. If another plugin like it pops up though, with enough community support, perhaps Intelli would consider implementing it. I'm personally more interested in using a map to show where I am in relation to the other cities.
A map that displays realms would mean Intelli would have to write that from scratch though, I think?

I think it would be great to have our old "once-a-day-update" map again. However, I think recently lag has been a much larger issue that Intelli has been working on.

As mitchie151 stated, we have had a map before. Map generating programs run server side, therefore they use server resources. As I remember it would take at minimum an hour to generate/update the map and at most it took 3-4 hours. And during this time of map generation it definitely decreased the servers, capabilities.
Right now Intelli is currently busy with solving the redstone problem and optimizing the server. Seeing as the server is already strained at times, I don't think adding another process the server has to run is a good idea.
