Just carry a sword/bow, get the netherrack skin, hold shift, and walk mine to get around them if you see them. It might work.

The nether is PVP.

If you can't handle that, take an overland route.

Should only take an hour or so if you run the whole way overland, I think.

I can get to Abyssus from spawn taking the Overworld in under 20 minutes. The speed of the Nether is a luxury, and it should have its own risks.

Once the map wipe happens, you could make your own hidden personal railroad in the nether connecting the spawns, just dig about 5 layers deep then mine to the other portal, then mine up and replace the netherrack to hide the rails, its what i do to get around stealthily and quickly minimizing risk

I've taught at least half a dozen first day noobs to travel the nether in complete safety. /msg me in game sometime and I'll teach you too. It really isn't very hard.

Aside from that, if you can't handle pvp or you aren't willing to use your brain, then maybe the speed of the nether isn't a luxury you can afford.

Now that the nether road near the bottom of the nether has been completed, everyone tends to hang out down there. If you can find a portal farther away from spawn (to avoid warping to the road), you should be able to move around with relatively little contact with people.
