Pretty much what it says.

Why? Is this really used in an offensive context often enough to justify it being added to the swear filter? I feel like it's actually just used to describe something that's strange more often than it is used as an insult.

That's like asking to add "weird" to the filter.

Queer means crazy. I don't know how a person could abuse that for evil purposes (unless they have a messed up coconut in their head instead of a brain)
My answer:

I can see why he made this suggestion. Queer can be used as a derogatory term. (before you guys start saying, "WEL W@FFLEZ CN B UZED @S A MEEN WERD", queer is used in a negative way more times than not.) But you have our English friends who use that word often to describe something weird. Although "f**" is a cigarette over there, they're odd people. I can see where he's coming from, but I don't support it fully.

Anyone who is using queer as an insult can expect to be banned in short order for insulting people. Otherwise, the word has no inherently obscene, vulgar, or inappropriate meaning; the definition is simply "odd or strange". It was merely co-opted by people of adolescent maturity as an insult, but is generally not particularly offensive; members of the LGBT movement are known to use the word themselves, especially in the phrase, "We're here, we're queer, get over it."

Gay = cheerful
F
** = cigarette
Queer = strange
The fact that these terms have taken on secondary modern meanings that relate to homosexuality and can be used as derogatives does NOT mean that their original definition is rendered obsolete.
The swear filter already goes too far in picking up words like "rape" in my opinion - I was censored and warned by it for using the old English expression "rape and pillage" in relation to the condition in which I found the realms where I am located. Hardly definable as swearing. It doesn't need to be made any stricter
Edit: Aelcalan beat me to the punch when I hit 'submit' ... same line of thought

I would point out that the British term for cigarette has also taken on OBSCENITY, hence why it IS a forbidden word on the server.
