Phoenix Terrain Mod.jpg
Possibly one of the greatest Mods for Minecraft I have encountered is the long-running PhoenixTerrainMod. In essence, it is a user-friendly tool to modify the very design and elements found in your SinglePlayer maps. There is also a SMP version for any of you who run a server.

This long text file is where all of the magic happens. Many values can be altered into infinity or negative infinity, although I wouldn't recommend it. http://phoenixterrainmod.com/wiki/index.php/Settings explains what some of the more confusing functions actually do.

Some examples from maps I have created
I attempted to make a snowy world and made sure to have plenty of open land. The result:
Snow Endless.jpg
Also interesting was that it created a crazy-realistic forest and treeline in the nearby area:
Huge snow treeline.jpg
What is also nice, which I will talk about later, is that PhoenixTerrainMod also implements custom "objects", among them being custom trees which you may have seen in a previous picture:
Inside the trees.jpg
Later, I decided to program a mostly forested map with a raised sea level. The result was forested islands:
Forested Island.jpg
I decided to make a crazy map. I unfortunately only took one picture at ground level (if you even want to call it "ground") of this map.
What the heck is this.jpg

I also found a nice river later on in the previous map.

So what are these Custom "Objects"?
I haven't had much time to discover how to manipulate it myself, but PhoenixTerrainMod allows for custom "objects". What this means is that you can design some sort of object, be it your own type of tree, a building, a rock structure, an ancient obelisk, a mountain spring, etc., and program it into the map so that these occur randomly across the map. Those super tall trees were actually custom-made objects that come pre-downloaded as a sampler into PTM.

My next goal will be to create my own species of tree and implement it into my map. The custom objects feature is especially incredible because it gives you literally as much control as you could ask for. Any object, any feature, you can create and put into your maps. You can also control its spawn rarity, distribution of, and in what biomes, along with some other variables. You can use multiple objects in one map too.

In any world you create with PTM, be it super-realistic, surreal, or just outright impossible in real life, imagine building a city or a building in it. The terrain itself makes for a much more dynamic and customizable experience, while creating custom objects also furthers this.

I hope you find as much excitement out of this great mod as I do :).

This sounds cool but I don't like using mods. First off they can destroy your save files and whatnot. Secondly, Notch doesn't support them according to the Wiki pages and the IPod apps... I like the clean version but one day I will venture into the world of modding. How safe is it anyway?

Most mods are perfectly safe, you just need to install them properly. If you delete the wrong file, or misplace one, it can render Minecraft completely useless. Of course, you just have to delete the bin folder to start a clean slate.

Notch does support modders to some extent, going as far as trying to make some officially recognized by Mojang. He wants to see new things done with the Minecraft engine, and hopes modders will make content that can be integrated into Minecraft itself. http://notch.tumblr.com/post/4955141617 ... n-for-mods

INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS:
(Currently only directions for Windows 7 users)

Warning: Opening a previous world with this mod will corrupt the file. Back up your worlds and save them elsewhere if they are important to you.

You will need:
-WinRAR, WinZip, or an equivalent.
-An up-to-date Minecraft client.
-PhoenixTerrainModSSPR1B10.zip. Download this from http://phoenixterrainmod.com/releases/.
-ModLoader Beta 1.5_01v4. Download this from http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/754 ... s-updates/.
***You do not need ModLoader or PhoenixTerrainMod installed yet. I will guide through these steps.

1. Open up the start menu and click "Run..."
2. In the command line, type in %appdata%/.minecraft/ and open it.
3A. To avoid conflict with other mods, delete the bin, texturepacks, and mods folders. Some people may not have the mods folder.
  • 3A1. Launch Minecraft and allow it to update. This is a fresh copy of Minecraft void of any mods or plugins (hopefully).
    3A2. Proceed to step 4.
3B. If you are feeling lucky, skip this step and go to 4.
4. Open the bin folder and locate the minecraft.jar file. Open this with WinRAR or an equivalent.
5. Delete the META-INF folder if it still exists.

Installing ModLoader (Continue from Step 5):
1. Drag the .class files from the ModLoader download into the minecraft.jar file where it will join the long list of .class files already there.

Installing PhoenixTerrainMod (Continue from Step 5):
1. Drag the .class files from the PhoenixTerrainModSSPR1B10.zip file into the minecraft.jar file.
2. Drag the BiomeTerrainModSettings.ini file in to your Minecraft folder. It should be accompanied by your bin, config, and saves folders.
3. Drag the BOBPlugins folder in to your Minecraft folder. This is where custom objects will be placed in the future.

Using the Mod
1. Opening the BiomeTerrainModSettings.ini file has you access the notepad file where you control everything. DO NOT DELETE any of these lines of text. The only thing you should be modifying is any integers or strings at the end.

2. Launch Minecraft. Begin a new world (I wouldn't recommend putting in a seed). Any world you start will take the settings from your .ini file. Previous worlds made WITH this mod will be preserved even after you alter your BiomeTerrainModSettings.ini file, which is nice.

Congrats! You should be enjoying a fully customizable Minecraft experience now! :D

I will post some explanations of what some of the BiomeTerrainSettings do if people so request it.
